Anthropology lovin

Eye Opener Robe
Man.  I saw a few robe contenders online earlier this week at Anthropologie, so of course I dashed in there earlier this week.

Oh, Anthropologie, why do you tempt me so?  Luckily, I managed to depart with a mere *handful* of what I was truly lusting after.  I'll let both of us fantasize that I snagged everything below....

Happy 30th Birthday, C-Dog/C-Meister/C-Man and every other nickname you have! To me, you'll always be the Best Royal Flush.  But seriously, both the hubs and I are so thankful to have you for a friend, you are a truly incredible person.  And I know, "incredible" is one of those words that people seem to toss about -- but rather than go into embarassing detail, I'll just say that I mean it :)

Have the bestest birthday -- cheers!

So ...

Did you watch it?

Damn, that was incredible.  I have to admit, there were some definite tears -- one might call it "sobbing," but I wasn't noisy.

Did y'all see the filmmakers' comments at the end?  I was wondering how the filmmakers got involved -- and that just adds a whole nother dimension of preciousness :)  And seriously -- who doesn't want to be Bill's friend, right?  I mean, I see Joan's family (yea!), and Jerry just seems to have so much spunk left.  (hee, I mean, check out his post-film update!)  Maybe it's the extra decade+ that Bill has on the other two.

Of course I've sought solace in pretty photos.  So here's some immediate cheer.  Tomorrow, all of us can all figure out how we can support our troops -- and, for those of us who are now also uber concerned about the elderly, can figure out how to visit nursing homes or write or assist those who, like Bill, Joan, and Jerry, live alone. {sigh}

(Note that I am apparently not the only one in need of comforting: there was quite the abundance of donuts at this hour, quite interesting.  And of course, pink is instant cheer!)

Veterans Day

Goodness.  I can't say thank you enough to all of you in the military services who give so much for us.

For anyone else interested: I found some beautiful photographs at Time/Life -- I definitely teared up when I saw this collection of homecomings for troops

And, while I know Veterans Day originated to honor the end of World War I, then ultimately became a holiday to honor veterans of all wars, and not just those deceased, the Life collection "Troops Honoring Fallen Comarades" is so touching, too.

And if any of you out there have the time, I encourage you to join me tonight in watching The Way We Get By tonight -- for us CST folk, it's on at 8p.  Check out your local PBS listings for your channel and air times.

Love Shak #12: Wacky favors

Dear L: o.m.g.  Maybe this is nuts.  But in my head, this is brilliant :)  I don't know what your idea is for favors, but I saw this Alton Brown episode (he's the one who does the science behind foods) on the Food Network for *making mayonnaise*!!  How cute would little jars of different flavored homemade mayos be!!

And see? I can't even find any images of mayo favors!  I'll assume it's because the idea is so unique, and not, er, for any other reasons :D

Now, Alton Brown made the homemade mayo version look so easy + fun to make. The first version he made had to be refrigerated after setting, but I could swear that the next one he made, he said could be put in the pantry for up to a month, meaning they'd be fine on the tables!  And the flavors you can make!  For example, via Butterfly Kisses:

1 cup light mayonnaise
1 teaspoon grated lemon rind
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 cup loosely packed fresh basil leaves

Process all ingredients in food processor or blender until smooth, stopping to scrape down sides. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 1 week.Garlic-Chili Mayonnaise: Omit lemon rind and basil. Substitute fresh lime juice for lemon juice. Stir together mayonnaise, juice, and 2 Tbsp. Asian garlic-chili sauce. Makes about 1 cup.

Recipe: Southern Living Magazine.

I know you're just overwhelmed by all this awesomeness ;)

Okay, other possible ideas: our own peach preserves, since peaches won't be in season in April.  Though, um, I guess it's November, so peach season is probably over already huh :D?  Damn.

Well, I also saw these cuties on Style Me Pretty.

Pies keep in the freezer (especially frozen pies that you can leave to thaw for guests while they're laying out on the tables!)... Or, hey!, assembling, freezing, then baking, then maybe refrigerating, then "thaw" to room temp while sitting on the tables?

Either way: cute things in jars = great favors!  And you know you can count on me to help assemble/freeze/bake ;)!
